Safety Equipment FAQ: Haix Boots, Safety Vests, Welding Gloves & Fire Extinguisher Basics

I manage PPE purchasing for a 200-person manufacturing company. Since 2020, I've placed more than 300 orders for boots, vests, gloves, and fire safety equipment. These are the seven questions people actually ask me—plus the answers I didn't know on day one.

1. Are Haix boots worth the money?

Yes. But that answer took me about a year to learn.

Cuff length. Gauntlet-style cuffs protect the wrists and forearms. That matters when your crew welds overhead or works in tight spaces.

If you're in Europe, EN 12477 is the standard. I don't remember the exact performance classes off the top of my head, but I verify the CE mark on every box before it goes into our welding bay. It's not paperwork for the sake of paperwork. It's how I know the leather was actually tested.

5. How to use a fire extinguisher (and what I check monthly)

Having fire extinguishers on the wall is not the same as being prepared. I learned that during our 2022 drill, when a senior operator almost aimed an extinguisher at his colleague instead of the fire pan. Training changed that.

The basics are the PASS method:

  1. P—Pull the pin.
  2. A—Aim at the base of the fire, not the flames.
